I recently left a book behind on a plane, one that I had been telling all my tolerant fellow passengers is a must-read. Despite attempts to track it down with lost property, it was gone for good. Anyone who has made this mistake knows that feeling of kicking yourself and wishing you had just paid that little bit of extra attention when getting up from your seat.

So, what was the book I lost that had me so distraught? Amphibious Soul by Craig Foster, he of My Octopus Teacher fame, who put our beautiful kelp forests on the map. It also happened to be a signed copy that everyone at the SATSA conference* was so generously gifted.
*Hint: If anyone wants to send me a spare they have lying around, it’d be greatly appreciated!

Even though I don’t plan on bracing the icy waters like Foster, I found the book so meaningful because it spoke of our connection to nature and the observation of tracks and signs, something I notice on my daily dog walks. While exploring the bush in my local neighbourhood for the last seven years, I have also sought out new discoveries, observed behaviour and watched the natural cycles of life.

I saw how the beautiful pink orchids, the Satyrium carneum, blossomed after the fire when they had all the sun. They were stocky, hardy blooms, but since the bush has regrown, they must now fight for that light. As a result, they grow on thinner stems, reaching almost a metre high. I am constantly reminded that every flower has its time to bloom and that although its beauty fades, it passes on its seeds to the next generation. I watch the birds breeding, and I marvel at the tortoises taking life at their own pace.

I remember the words of a long-passed fisherman, who abdicated from ‘normal’ life and instead chose to live out his days on his own remote paradise along the Cape Point peninsula. He had the privilege of observing the seasons for more than 40 years from this vantage point. One day, he said to me, “The grass is seeding; the canaries will come.” And the canaries did come. Every October as I walk in the long, seeding grass, I am reminded of the passing of the seasons and that those canaries will come – they always do.

Nature guides – bush, coastal and marine – will appreciate that every day, they have the incredible privilege of working in this space and reconnecting people with nature. New approaches such as forest bathing, zen guiding and citizen science are changing the way we see the world.

In tourism, we have the incredible gift of watching travellers experience life-changing moments. I saw it in the eyes of a visiting cousin, who was aglow as we watched the southern right whales frolic off the De Kelders coastline. I have seen experiences like this change the lives of young students on ocean voluntourism projects, who have gone on to switch careers to study species we can help preserve. Seeing the gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda changed the trajectory of my own journey.

In the never-ending search for the meaning of life, these moments of reconnection remind us that we are part of something so much bigger. And, in travel, we get to make dreams come true or even inspire new ones.

After five years, I recently went ‘home’ to Durban to see my family. I say ‘home’ in inverted commas because the concept to me is always more a feeling than a place. And whilst I can honestly say I loved growing up in Durban, my last 20 years in the Western Cape have felt more like home.

As any expat will tell you though, leaving one place behind for another means missing family. With my father’s advancing age there was an urgency to experience a real hug, not a virtual one, and to chat about all things legacy related. Keeper of knowledge and sentimentality is my father, and we (ok me) devoured the perusing of old photographs of ancestors gone before and lovingly remembered. Like the postcards from 1915 sent by my great-grandfather who was interned at Fort Napier, then a prison for those assumed to be enemy subjects. They were well treated here, and some beautiful woodwork pieces came out of that time that still form part of our lives. I have a beautiful wooden glove box, now over 100 years old, that is a prized possession.

Life often comes full circle, and I took the advantage of attending a reunion of old school friends. I am sure you have noticed that when you are with old friends that have known you since youth, there is less explaining to do. Where we come from is all part of our story, a puzzle piece to who we are. There are many sayings that discourage looking back, but often, looking back truly does remind us just how far we have come. We are quick to gloss over just how much has been achieved and how resilient and wiser we have become in that process.

The theme of looking back was recently explored at the SATSA Conference where stories were shared including a reflection on the resilience of the tourism industry during the pandemic. During one of the panel discussions, the history of mankind in Africa was discussed and the words ‘brushing back of time’ and ‘standing on the shoulders of our ancestors’ resonated with me. Of course, there was also much looking forward to the future with a sense of optimism.

All of this had me thinking of our individual tourism stories as we share milestones and meaningful anniversaries. Looking back to your origins and the journey along the way is integral to who you are now. Celebrate your organisation’s history – the triumphs and the hard times – and share your history with your guests and clients. They are now part of that story, and will understand you better as a result. Together, you can craft a future with care. Look back, learn lessons and look towards creating a lasting legacy.

Are you a hopeaholic? When the world appears to be falling apart, the roof is leaking, and seasonal affective disorder has set in, how do we find hope that the sun will shine again. Hopelessness can be mild – it could feel as elusive as that extra hour of sleep so badly needed, or as bad as the knowledge that you will never find the proverbial unicorn.

The Oxford Dictionary defines hope as ‘a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen’. The word hopeaholic seems to be attributed to socio-political activist, Gloria Steinhem, who used the word at the 2014 Makers Conference.

First, let’s hope the world is not falling apart. Poet Tomás Q. Morín, who has felt eco-anxiety since he was a child, and used writing to process his feelings wrote, “We are capable of collaborative destruction, but we are also capable of collaborative repair.” Those doing good work and making a difference in the tourism world constantly provide inspiration. They have learnt the value of collaboration, contributing to the preservation of wild spaces and providing a supportive network to empower people. Each of us can also make a difference, and we can usually start in our neighbourhood.

Jane Goodall preaches hope – she even wrote a Book of Hope and in it she says, “Hope is often misunderstood. People tend to think that it is simply passive wishful thinking: I hope something will happen but I’m not going to do anything about it. This is indeed the opposite of real hope, which requires action and engagement.” I feel hopeful as it is through the hope of many that we can and have turned around the extinction of species.

In this podcast, Dr Chan M. Hellman, explains that hope is the belief that our future can be better than our past – and that we can make that future a reality. He says hope is the process towards wellbeing, and that it is a cognitive process not an emotion. Hope is a framework for action, unlike wishing which is passivity towards a goal. Apathy is also the opposite of hope. He bases hope on three simple ideas:

Goals – having desirable goals that drive our everyday actions

Pathways thinking – the strategies or roadmap to get to our goals and the ways to overcome barriers through problem solving or seeking new pathways

Willpower – identified as the motivational piece of hope – the capacity to self-regulate our thoughts, behaviours, and emotions along the way through focused attention and intention on the pathways, especially during times of adversity

Hellman goes on to say that when we nurture hope we see significant improvements in wellbeing, emotional regulation, better coping strategies, more connectedness, improved relationships, improved learning and engagement, and even improved pain tolerance. He reminds us that “hope is the process; the outcome is always wellbeing”.

As an eternal optimist, I am ready to embrace more hope. Perhaps we can start a ‘Hopeaholics Not-So-Anonymous’. Let’s share more good news, take steps that lead to positive change, and grow the swell of hope for a better future. #hopeaholic

The south-easter wind blows strongly in the Western Cape. When it does, I know the seagulls will take full advantage, flying as if for the first time, while other birds seem to take a break. I can only imagine this flight was what inspired Richard Bach when he wrote Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

I, like many, have a fondness for birds, their beauty, their song, and their incredible will to survive in our urban world. On my morning walk, I had some awesome bird encounters. An egret flew overhead, its wings reflecting the golden sunrise. I saw two pied crows scavenging on a small bird, and some geese honking on their journey. The sacred ibis flew towards the beach, where they often forage. Then, my resident Cape wagtails harassed me for a treat – all before the day even started! Oh, and I must mention the melodic nightjar calling just before sunrise. It’s the best alarm clock ever.

Did you know that birds sing in their dreams? Researchers from the University of Buenos Aires have discovered that a bird’s voice box moves when it sleeps, like how your dog’s paws move when dreaming, and they have translated this movement into song. You can read more in this recently published work.

These musings coincide with World Migratory Bird Day and there is no denying the wow factor of the distances that some birds can cover. Storm petrels weigh only 18 to 20g, less than a pen, yet they navigate stormy seas with gale force winds and high swells literally crossing an ocean to reach our shores.

Like many travellers, birds too are following the sun, and the summer migrants are a good reminder of the warmer days about to arrive. The woodland kingfisher is an intra-African migrant heralding summer’s arrival in the Lowveld. I marvel at the yellow billed kites that travel from Egypt to South Africa hunting alongside our more resident jackal buzzards. And of course, the arrival of the swallows is a sure sign that the days will soon be longer. Nowhere is team work more prominent that in the V shape flight that we see birds take, as each takes a turn to lead and others rest.

It’s no coincidence that birds are used to highlight the DISC personality profiles. Do you identify as the confident parrot or peacock, the peace-keeping dove, the insightful owl with impeccable attention to detail, or the eagle soaring above who always sees the bigger picture? We all have elements of these within us and within the Big Ambitions team we have a healthy flock.

Birds remind us to connect with nature, to stay grounded when needed and to soar when strong winds blow. They even remind us to laugh. Just the other day this Cape weaver call reminded me of a late aunt’s unique giggle, and I could not help but laugh along. Listen for yourself here.

So, I hope you notice the birds around you, and then fluff up your ‘feathers’ my friends, and have a wonderful week!

As I sit writing down my thoughts for this week’s Monday Musings, the gale force winds and rain are increasing in ferocity, making for a very windy, wild, and adventurous welcome to all the Africa Travel Week delegates. Likely, there’ll be more drama to report by the time this lands, which ties in with my theme of putting things off until tomorrow.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that tomorrow, the power may be off. Besides load shedding, when you live further from the city, the poles that give us power are prone to falling over in a storm. So, it’s always best I crack on instead of procrastinating!

Richard Branson recently shared one of his old report cards, hinting at his dyslexia. Some years ago, my father found one of mine, and without even seeing it, I could tell you that most of my reports said ‘too talkative’. I’ve since joked that when interviewing someone, we should probably take a sneak peek at their report cards. I am not saying we don’t change as we get older, but there tend to be some key identifiers that rear their head from a young age.

So, hands up if you crammed before exams! I often swotted hard the night before, and I started wondering if that trait might be related to my procrastination still today. Procrastination can take many forms, from working on other tasks, cleaning the house, scrolling on social media, watching movies, or socialising. Of course, in many cases, that downtime is, in fact, critical for the creative juices to flow, ultimately enhancing the ‘delayed’ project.

When listening to this podcast for writers, it sounds like procrastination has a lot to do with ‘imposter syndrome’. Savannah Gilbo drills down into the reasons your novel may still be unwritten, or perhaps why a long-held unfinished goal still niggles at you.

Courtesy of author Dr Valerie Young, Gilbo analyses the types of imposter syndrome common to high achievers that easily leads to procrastination, and I think we can all relate to elements of these:

Perfectionism – if it isn’t perfect, then there’s a reluctance to let the job go.

Natural genius – setting the bar too high too early on, which is also related to perfectionism.

Superhuman – unrealistic expectations and feeling overwhelmed, when the project simply requires more time than you have.

Soloist – trying to go it alone because you feel asking for help will make you seem incompetent.

Expert – putting off starting until you have all the knowledge.

I am going to be more observant when I feel any of these elements show up and the resistance kicking in, and employ some of the following solutions:

Refer to the adage, ‘better done than perfect’.

Reach out to those with more experience when advice and support are needed.

Break the task down into manageable pieces and celebrate the small wins.

Identify priorities – daily, weekly, and monthly, and time-block for my most creative and focused periods.

Manage expectations regarding the time each task truly requires.

And if you’ve been parking that dream because life keeps getting in the way, then let’s agree not to wait for tomorrow. Instead, let’s take small steps every day to help us get where we need to be.

So, how is it going so far? Really well. Historically, I have often chosen a word that was more action based, but choosing an emotion feels more like honouring a way of being rather than adding something to the never-ending to-do list.

Dr Rangan Chatterbee, in conversation with Gemma Newton, talks about setting intentions for the day, and finding a mindful way of being – whether that is being joyful, compassionate or grateful, and asking the question of ‘What can I do today that will honour that value?’

Joy is intentional. Sometimes we need to step back and question whether something brings joy, and if does not, how it can be made more joyful. My recipe for joy includes nature, my dogs, friends and family, belly laughs, music, dancing, movement, creative work (thankfully, I have that), and making a difference. I can bring in elements of each of these into my life every day.

A recent Tourism Review article stated that the uncertainty in the world has taken a toll on people’s mental health and that nowadays, people seek daily doses of happiness to brighten their lives. “Brands that can add touchpoints of joy and happiness to their campaigns will be able to build stronger connections with their customers, according to experts. These distractions often leave a lasting impact and improve the brand’s perception and customer relations.”

This speaks to the travel trend of connecting with others, the growth in adventure tourism, and the interest in sustainability that conveys a sense of purpose in what we do – these are all part of the ways in which we spread joy in travel.

What brought me joy the last couple of months? Spending time with loved ones, old and new friends, and family. I have even planned some advance joy and booked a ticket for later this year to spend time with my family in Durban.

After all, it is in relationships that we experience joy – those belly laughs are intoxicating! The wonderful thing about joy is that it is infectious, spilling over to others. One of the key reasons those of us in the travel world stay the course – the people we meet and grow to love along the way, and the joy extended when we reconnect.

This is also one of the main reasons I personally love going to World Travel Market Africa, to see all the wonderful people in travel that I know. So watch out all: I will be coming in for some hugs soon and spreading some joy!

As the year supposedly winds down and many of us are already in holiday mode, the to-do list seems as long as ever. Work tasks excluded, my latest list includes spring cleaning of my home, my laptop and making time to update all my info, aka my life, to a new phone. My self-induced to-do list anxiety may be an inherited condition – my father, who is in his 80s, still has a lengthy list too.

I know many others feel the same sense of overwhelm when they look at everything that must still be done. So how do you not let your to-do list become a source of stress in and of itself? I happened upon the wise words of Chris Bailey on the Time and Attention podcast, who acknowledges that the list is a reality and we never get to the end, even in retirement. Sounds daunting, but he speaks of acceptance and not stressing over it. Rather, he says, we must “prioritise our tasks just enough so we can identify what is most important in that moment then cultivate a presence and a calm mind to handle that task.” His calm voice did make me feel a little better.

The other thing I must do is make my yearly trifle. It’s so good, so I don’t know why I only make it at Christmas. Everyone thinks theirs is the best trifle but of course, my family knows that our mom’s is the best, and an art in itself – the recipe must be perfectly followed if we want to channel those childhood memories.

The name trifle comes from the Old French “trufe” (or truffle), meaning something of little importance, a bit like the to-do list as this time of the year. Yet, I realise that my trifle strategy could perhaps help me in approaching my list.

So here are my trifle tips:

Don’t procrastinate – Buy those tinned pears now before they are sold out.

Everything in its own best timing – Make sure to buy the freshest cream closest to trifle date, avoiding the inevitable ‘only whip left on the shelf’.

Have the right ingredients – Sourcing the right Swiss roll is important, as is the correct brand of custard.

Pay attention to the task – Mixing the custard is an art and when I have tried to multitask and lost focus, the custard has quickly turned lumpy or burnt.

Know when to let go – Don’t overwhip the cream or it turns to butter (I can’t be the only one that this has happened to).

Apply special touches – Flake and strawberries are winners for the topping.

The most important of all is: Don’t skip the merry, I mean sherry.

With a to-do list as multilayered as a trifle, I must remind myself to just stop and breathe, and that the most important thing to do is just be in the moment this silly season.

Mindful Musings

If you are not sure, the phrase “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings” means that one should not presume to know the outcome of an event while it is still in progress. It was used in reference to the buxom opera sopranos, with a specific reference to a twenty-minute farewell scene in Wagner’s opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen that leads directly to the finale. Full disclosure: even I had to look that up.

As our world evolves, we’ve thankfully moved past the need for canaries to tell us the oxygen is running low in the coal mine. But it makes me wonder – are we conscious of terms we use that might be eluding our audience? The canary term is often used in conservation to indicate there is a problem. But if it is no longer understood, are we getting the point across or creating more confusion?

As for the dodo, you don’t hear much about this poor extinct bird these days. However, I was impressed to hear all about it from a ten-year-old recently – kudos to his teachers. It underscores an important point: to get across the fragility of a species, we must help people understand the journey to extinction. And we must get our point across in a way that resonates with our audience. Having worked with many school groups, I know this is an area that needs addressing.

Our language is evolving, and so must we. We reduce words to acronyms, or even emojis, and new words are added to the dictionary every year. So, the big question is: how do we ensure our message is not lost in translation? In a Grammar Girl podcast, Gretchen McCullough mentioned an interesting point – that communication norms can vary widely among different groups and subcultures.

But there’s one constant amid all the changes and variations – the range of human emotion that is universal across all generations. This consistency is where the power of storytelling comes into play. A narrative that resonates can have a significant impact, thanks to the universality of our emotions. We must go back to the KISS principle of keeping it simple. If we can evoke a tear, bring a smile, or have someone laughing, then we have done our work.

So don’t give up the ghost just yet… We’ve got this.

Every morning I take my dogs for a walk and along the way I often find myself advising them on their behaviour. I tend to find little messages in nature, like the time I told a bee “Don’t get angry, it will kill you.” Yes, well!

I am never quite sure if the message is for my dogs or myself. Natalia Rosa recently shared her own realisations from dog walks. Clearly a daily walk with furry companions is good for us. They get me out of bed, a much harder feat in winter, and I’m always grateful for the beauty I see because I went outside. Birds fly overhead. The mountain I love is a constant source of inspiration. And sometimes, I get to walk between the moon and the sun.

One of my dogs, a recent rescue adoptee, is currently navigating his obsessions – for birds, cats, and mole hills. Some of the nuggets of wisdom I share with him:

Be careful where you stick your nose. Having stuck my nose in far too many things along life’s journey, this is a great reminder to butt out of business that does not concern me. In the early part of my career, a mentor said, “Don’t fight everyone’s battles for them.” Many times, it is I who have spoken out whilst the person who should have stepped up did not, and this kind of leads me to the next point.

If you are looking for trouble, it will find you. Who knows what might bite my dog. Sometimes it is best to step back. This has never been more pertinent in the age of social media when many times I want to express an opinion, and I remind myself to hold back. If the whole neighbourhood is barking at you, walk on. I say, “don’t even look at them.”

“It’s a foolish dog, bark at a flying bird.” I do love this gem from Bob Marley. Sometimes chasing or yapping at things that will never change*, will make you crazy. Then there are those defensive Spotted thick-knee (dikkop) birds and I say, “Ignore. That is a crazy bird and has no consequence on your life.” Hmm. We also know better than to tangle with a gang of guinea fowl.

Stay focused on your walk. Every time my dog stops to look at those very attractive spurfowl, I gently turn his head and say, “stay focused on your walk”. He has become very good at listening to this nugget, and I am reminded to stay focused on my walk, on my path.

We all have a path to walk – I hope yours is filled with beauty, and preferably a furry friend.

*If yapping will make real and positive change, keep yapping!

Marketing Musings

by Lucy Mussett

Continuous Learning: Stay updated on marketing trends.

Remember, a mix of creativity, adaptability, and audience understanding is key to thriving amidst competition. Implement these strategies to stand out and succeed in the dynamic marketing landscape.

Do you need to think like a gambler to outsmart the competition?

Team Musings

by Teresa Richardson

Unveiling Your Path to Perfect First Impressions: A Masterclass in Personal Impact

Ever pondered the profound wisdom behind the adage, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”? It’s no mere cliché – it’s an essential mantra in our world of swift judgments and swift decisions. Today, we’re about to embark on a journey that will unravel the intricate art of first impressions, all while keeping it as refreshing as a playful penguin’s jig!

Let’s start at the beginning – a combination of appearance, body language, and eloquence all contribute towards what we call the first impression. Imagine this: you enter a room, and before your voice resonates, opinions have already formed based on your attire, your confident stride, and that captivating sparkle in your eyes.

Now, let’s take this knowledge to the professional arena. Whether you’re entering a job interview or engaging with a potential client for the first time, that initial handshake (or virtual wave) has the power to shape your entire professional journey. It’s akin to the opening sequence of a blockbuster – captivating enough, and your audience will eagerly await the next act; falter, and the reviews may be less than favourable.

No worries, though – I’m here to equip you with tailored tips for the diverse spectrum of DISC personality styles. Brace yourselves for the reveal:

For the Dominant style personality (D): Exude confidence and focus on results. Let your dynamism be the star of the show!

The Influential style personality (I): Flash that radiant smile and embrace enthusiasm. Your energy is utterly infectious!

The Steady style personality (S): Exhibit empathy and become an exceptional listener. Your serene and understanding demeanour speaks volumes.

The Conscientious style personality (C): Showcase meticulous attention to detail. Precision is your ultimate asset.

Now, ponder this: What initial impression do you truly leave? Are you the magnetic maven or the analytical architect?

Of course, life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. We’ve all experienced those awkward moments, akin to stepping on a metaphorical banana peel during our first impression waltz. But fear not – your escape plan is at hand. Authenticity, sustained eye contact, and affirmative body language are your allies in avoiding mishaps.

But wait, there’s more! In this era of virtual omnipresence, mastering online first impressions takes on a new dimension.
