At this point in the build-up to the Festive Season, chances are you’ve already heard Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” blaring over the aisles at your local Pick n Pay, or from your neighbour’s house across the street.
It’s one of those anthems that everybody knows. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, you’ll likely recall that signature intro chime, the drumbeat and the piano part leading up to that iconic line: “All I want for Christmas is you”.
With the official video on YouTube now sitting at 565 million views, what many don’t know is that it took only 15 minutes to write, and remains the biggest international hit of Mariah’s entire career.
The Christmas smash, which she described as a “happy accident” during an interview in an Amazon Music documentary, is a very happy accident that has earned her over $60 million according to The Economist. But perhaps even more impressive is its ability to charm listeners across the globe year after year, despite its ubiquity.
While the song is a testament to the Queen of Christmas’ ability to home in on her skills as an artist and capture the spirit of the season, it also proves that simple, authentic messaging goes a long way. Love it or hate it, it’s an anthem that continues to capture the spirit of the season – it’s not about the presents, it’s about the feeling. The feeling of hopefulness, homecoming, and the ones we hold closest to our hearts, no matter how near or far they are.
So, what are you wanting this Christmas? Big Ambitions Director & CEO, Natalia Rosa, captures it best: “An infinite mindset throughout 2021”. How about we play that on repeat this Festive season?
