Monday Musings 24 January: Remember when it was rude to take your shoes off at the airport?

The past week felt tinged with nostalgia for some of our little Big Ambitions team. The reason? Where to start?

The killing of the fish paste. Who didn’t feel distraught at the news that Peck’s Anchovette and Redro fish paste are no more? First the great Marmite shortage, then Nestlé’s Chocolate Log, and now our beloved fish paste. Journalist Jeremy Maggs summed up our collective feelings when he said: “My world is shattered.” We feel you Jeremy….

Blackberry was the next on the chopping block this week. It appears we can no longer use that old BlackBerry phone sitting at the bottom of our drawers somewhere.

And then the matriculants. Social media was flooded with pictures from parents celebrating the matric results. A feel-good moment – especially after the rollercoaster year we’ve had. But the parents in the group also felt a pang of melancholy. After all: “parenting is the one job where, the better you are, the more surely you won’t be needed in the long run.”

For those of us with teenagers, that melancholy was short-lived. I know mine was when my 16- and 14-year old had an actual argument about the ‘right’ way to roll your eyes at your parents. Thanks girls!

Just when I thought I couldn’t feel any older, the news broke that Meat Loaf had passed away. So, that’s it. I’ll never officially know what the man means with “I will do anything for love, but I won’t do that”. It will be one of the great rock ‘n roll mysteries. There are theories of course….

Meat Loaf’s passing also spurred a little nostalgia for the 90s. It was the last era where life existed without the Internet, social media, and everyone having cell phones. Instead we had Walkmans, VHS tapes, and video rental shops.

American Presidents were a lot less annoying and a lot more entertaining. Only in the 90s would it be possible to have a ‘Zippergate’ and have a President be remembered for saying: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman”. Good times!

Air travel in the 90s was a lot simpler. Flying with nail files, mini shampoo bottles and perfumes? No problem! We didn’t even have to put them into plastic bags.

As Buzzfeed points out: “Loved ones could walk you right to the gate. You could bring snacks, sandwiches, and drinks onto the plane with you. You never had to take your shoes off for any motherfucking thing. In fact, it used to be rude to take your shoes off in the airport.”

Better still: we weren’t afraid to explore. If we got lost, we spoke with real human beings who knew the area. But best of all: whatever happened in Vegas, actually stayed in Vegas.

Marketing Musings

Inspirational, rags-to-riches stories remain a powerful marketing tool. Twitter showed us the ropes this week with a billboard ad campaign featuring tweets from now celebrity athletes and entertainers who made their dreams a reality.

The campaign features old tweets from 12 athletes and celebrities that were posted before they hit stardom. The tweets are superimposed on current images featuring the celebrities “who manifested their dreams.”

One billboard features Matthew A. Cherry, the former football player and Oscar winner who tweeted in June 2012: “I’m gonna be nominated for an Oscar one day. Already claimin it.”

Cherry won the Academy Award for the short film Hair Love in 2020.

Lovato predicted in a tweet from 2010 that “one day, I’m going to sing the national anthem at a super bowl. “She performed the Star Spangled Banner before kick off of Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in February 2020.
