Over the years, this column has been many things: catharsis for the writer, a moment of levity for readers, and a little pocket of shared humanity. We mused over elephants in the Chobe, the eccentricity of World Naked Gardening Day, and the whimsical art of hobby-horsing. Each week brought a dash of curiosity, humour, and a connection that transcended inboxes.

But life changes. The world feels busier, in some ways heavier, and though we still carry echoes of that time, the energy has shifted. Monday Musings, once a lifeline, feels like a chapter that has run its course.

Just as all things must evolve to stay relevant, so too must Monday Musings. What began as a comforting voice during uncertain times now seeks to adapt to the needs of a world that is constantly moving forward. While its original purpose has been fulfilled, its spirit – the desire to connect, inspire, and provoke thought – remains very much alive. This is not the end of our musings; rather a transformation, one that aligns with where we are today and where we aspire to go.

In the spirit of this farewell, we reflect on the art of goodbyes, beautifully captured in this musing by Jared Miller (Thank you Melissa for sharing this little gem when I needed it most). It is particularly poignant to me having just had to say goodbye to some of our team in our restructuring.

Goodbyes, whether personal or professional, are never easy, but they create space for growth and renewal. They honour what has been while paving the way for what’s next, reinforcing the trust and values that guide us.

These “foolish” adventures, mine usually travel related, are the technicolour threads in what may otherwise be my beige tapestry of life. Each of these misadventures, fuelled by a cocktail of curiosity and recklessness, were my own personal fool’s errands. And you know what? They were worth every moment. Disclaimer: don’t try this at home…

With that in mind, what if we saw these follies not as a precipice of doom, but as a launchpad for the extraordinary? Picture the fool not as a hapless wanderer, but as a daring pioneer, the kind of person who looks at the horizon and sees not just a sunset, but a canvas waiting to be painted with the colours of adventure.

In a world obsessed with certainty, perhaps it is the fool who truly understands the art of living. Perhaps the fool isn’t really a fool at all. She’s the brave soul who steps off the edge of the cliff, not because she’s reckless, but because she’s willing to see where the journey might lead.

There’s something deeply powerful in that. It’s the kind of foolishness we need more of in our lives—the willingness to start something new, to try something unfamiliar, to risk looking silly or failing miserably. Because the greatest adventures almost always start with a single step into the unknown.

Think about it. When was the last time you did something for the first time? Not something grand or extreme—no need to take a selfie on the top of the Empire State Building’s antenna.

I’m talking about the small leaps, the micro-adventures that add a dash of unpredictability to our routines. They’re the stories you’ll bore your friends with one day, assuming you haven’t traded them for a goat in some bizarre Balkan bartering mishap.

Speaking of bizarre, and perhaps your next micro-adventure, let me introduce you to the wild world of hobby-horsing. Picture this: grown adults prancing around on stick horses, jumping over poles with the seriousness of Olympic athletes.

My first reaction when I saw this on TikTok was, “Well, that’s just plain ridiculous.” But then it hit me—if “Raygun” can dominate like my dog rolling around on their back in a fit of joy, why couldn’t “Sir Prance-a-Lot” be out there clearing hurdles at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics?

Maybe the real foolishness isn’t in trying something ridiculous; it’s in never trying it at all. Hold my beer, “Raygun”…

So here’s your mission, should you choose to accept it (and if you don’t, I’ll assume you’re too busy with that bubble wrap): This week, do something gloriously, unapologetically foolish.

Will you look silly? Absolutely. Will it matter? Who cares! Because here’s the dirty little secret: The fools are the ones truly living. The rest of us are just spectators.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a stick horse to name. I’m leaning towards “Neigh-sayer.” Hope it fits in my hand-luggage.

I’d love to organise your cat’s birthday party while simultaneously mediating a peace treaty between your goldfish” We become human Jenga towers, piling on responsibilities until the inevitable collapse or, as I did yesterday, letting you down for the first time since we started Monday Musings in the first year of COVID. 

Who am I kidding? Perhaps you haven’t even read up to this point…

Now, if you are reading this while your calendar looks like a game of Tetris gone wrong, breathe. This isn’t about shame – that’s just another dance partner we need to ditch. It’s about recognising that people-pleasing is a habit, not a personality trait.

It’s about understanding that sometimes putting your own needs first isn’t selfish, it’s self-preservation. It’s about making choices that align with your values, even if it means stepping off the dance floor from time to time.

To anyone feeling like their life’s car is veering off-road because they’ve been following everyone else’s GPS: it’s time to recalibrate. Give yourself the grace to pause, reassess, and maybe even make a U-turn. You might even make the next Monday Musings deadline.

Remember, living authentically isn’t about perfection. It’s about gradually aligning your actions with your values, one step at a time. Remembering that today’s decision needs to be kind to tomorrow’s Natalia.

Celebrating Freedom Day this past weekend, we commemorated an historic milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter – one of reflecting deeply, speaking truth, offering forgiveness, and opening hearts. The soul of this nation has been forged in the crucible of this process. Has it been easy? Hell no.

As Brené Brown, a luminary in the field of wholehearted living, reminds us, “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable.”

Warning, I’m about to be vulnerable:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself hardening my heart as a coping mechanism. I felt driven to be the one who kept others uplifted, the person in control, driving things forward when others couldn’t. It was a mask I wore to protect myself and those around me.

It’s taken years to realise that this mask was no longer needed. I’ve been wading through a very painful process of pulling it down, exposing my vulnerabilities, and allowing myself to feel the pain and hurt that comes with it. It’s been a gradual process of weaning myself off the mask, learning to be vulnerable, and adjusting to how people react.

Amid my own struggle to embrace vulnerability, I encountered James Fernie from Uthando (Love) South Africa, who rekindles hope with his infectious enthusiasm to “share the love”. The invitation is compelling, pulling even the most disheartened among us toward a vision of communal and global unity.

James’ new vision for the establishment of a Heart of Cape Town and Peace Centre is not merely an initiative; it’s a movement and social enterprise that aims to fuse community development with cultural tourism. Through this centre, visitors would be able to explore South Africa’s history, engage with community-driven projects, and take home a hand-crafted heart made by local artisans – a tangible reminder of the message of love and unity.

And, as these hearts find their way across the globe, they carry with them stories of a South Africa that chose reconciliation over conflict and unity over division. They serve as powerful symbols of the heart awakening that is stirring within us all.

James’ enthusiasm is infectious, and despite my own struggles, I find myself drawn to his call to embrace wholehearted living. As Brené Brown says, “Embracing this calling requires us to live wholeheartedly – showing up with authenticity, letting ourselves be truly seen. It means choosing vulnerability over fear, love over hatred, and connection over division. This is the path of the heart warrior.”

So, this is me wearing my heart on my sleeve, embracing the vulnerability that comes with being me and saying this is a journey of the heart we should probably do together. And while we’re engaging with others from a place of profound courage and heartfelt sincerity, let’s help James with his heart-centred movement and be part of something larger than ourselves.

It’s a reminder of the country coming together, a celebration of unity and diversity, and, of course, some rather questionable dance moves attempted in bars across the globe.

The brain has a remarkable ability to encode music with pin-sharp memories and powerful emotions. Music triggers the release of dopamine, our brain’s feel-good neurotransmitter, much like the tastiest meal or a chuckle at a friend’s joke.

More intriguingly, music activates parts of the brain linked to memory and emotion. It’s not just a tune you’re hearing; it’s a time capsule. A few bars of a meaningful song can instantly shoot us back through space and time.

The soundtrack to our lives, music allows us to relive our most cherished moments time and again. Because, in the end, we’re all just a melody away from another time and place.

Dear disruptors, in a world where the only constant is change, being the catalyst is not just revolutionary – it is essential. By blowing up what’s not working, we make space for the new.

The next time you’re on that Zoom call, staring at the same PowerPoint slides that could put an insomniac to sleep, be the one to throw in the disruptive question like tossing a chunk of meat into a shark-infested sea. Watch the waves it creates and ride them to uncharted territories. Because let’s face it, if you’re not willing to poke holes in your own life raft, someone else will.

My companion through this contemplation has been my brother’s ever-busy Irish collie, Arlo. We traverse forest trails together daily, sometimes even twice when I’m up for the challenge. Through the trees, along the mossy paths, (often when it’s raining, which it appears to do on a whim in Ireland), Arlo’s endless energy is infectious. As he barrels along, carefree and brimming with joy, I find myself reflecting on my own routines, habits – a creature of comforts, like so many of us.

An email from Alex Brogan popped up last week, discussing Jeff Bezos’ Regret Minimisation Framework. You know the one – looking at life’s choices through the rear-view mirror of an 80-year-old self. The woods, the walks, and the wisdom seemed to collide in this moment, delivering a Eureka I was not expecting but so desperately needed. Read more about it and the practical tips the framework provides here (you’ll need to subscribe but it’s worth it). 

Choices feel weighty. The road splits ahead, and every path seems both inviting and intimidating. One of those splits led to a highway (thank you Arlo *not*). Yet, as I watch his “Royal Fluffiness” chase his tail, and herds upon herds of sheep, oblivious to the worries of the world, I’m reminded that it’s okay to change course, to sniff out new adventures, to chase after that elusive rabbit (figuratively speaking, of course).

This Regret Minimisation Framework is a reminder that we are allowed to pursue our passions and shift our directions, and it’s perfectly fine if the path is sometimes strewn with twigs and a stray pinecone or two. After all, wouldn’t our 80-year-old selves applaud our courage and regret the paths left untrodden?

So, here’s to your new dream, to grabbing those opportunities, and to teaching old dogs new tricks. To finding that elusive work-life balance, even if it takes a rowdy Irish Collie and a bit of Irish luck.
