Everyone’s scrambling to try these viral egg recipes

From cloud eggs to shakshuka, viral egg recipes are hatching endless creativity, proving there’s no limit to what you can do with a clutch of eggs and a sprinkle of social media inspo.

But did you know that for many companies around the globe, the 4-day workweek isn’t a special occasion? It’s the norm. And these companies’ employees aren’t constantly struggling to keep their heads above water; they’ve streamlined their workdays to be just as productive, if not more so.

The goal of this shift? To produce a happier, healthier workforce and results-oriented (rather than clock-watching) company cultures.

But how can this approach possibly work?

4 Day Week Global believes they’ve got the recipe for success with their 100-80-100 model (100% of the pay in 80% of the time and in exchange for a commitment to delivering 100% of the output).

The NPO (which is also one of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2024) recently led the world’s largest four-day workweek trial. It was a major success, with most companies adopting the policy permanently. After a year, the majority reported positive impacts on employee well-being, reduced staff turnover, and improved recruitment. Unsurprisingly, employees also reported greater job satisfaction.

Could South Africa be next?

Do I think South Africa’s ready to make the transition? Perhaps… if we’re willing to swap ‘African time’ for optimising our time! According to 4 Day Week Global, most companies transitioning to a 4-day workweek implement three key changes:

1. They significantly reduce and restructure meetings.
2. They make more intentional use of technology.
3. They redesign the workday to include distinct periods for:

• Deep work (and, I’d imagine, they also adopt an outcomes-focused approach in everything they do – P.S. thanks, Natalia, for transforming the way we work with this golden nugget)
• Collaboration
• Breaks
• Social interaction

And get this: research indicates that the average employee loses a significant portion of their day – around 2-3 hours – to unproductive meetings, ineffective technology use, and distractions. In short, a 4-day week is achievable for many, but it’s currently hidden beneath inefficient and outdated work practices.

As the founders of 4 Day Week Global say, soon the question won’t be whether a 4-day work week is possible, but rather “what does a good 4-day work week look like?”

Maybe there’s hope that this clumsy work/life balancing act could soon stabilise.

It’s exactly what it sounds like: you’re not asking people to click anywhere. No links, no “read more,” no redirects. Instead, you’re serving up valuable, impactful content right where your audience already is.

Zero-click content provides users with useful information/insights/actionable tips/insider secrets without requiring users to leave the platform. It can take various forms, including threads with lists or step-by-step instructions, carousels explaining concepts, or short tutorial videos.

And it’s at the core of every successful social media marketing strategy in 2024.

Why zero-click content?

Our CEO Natalia Rosa explains:

“Most social media platforms’ algorithms now favour this type of content – and it’s easy to understand why. It keeps the user on the platform, eliminates clickbait, provides value upfront, and allows users to consume more content in less time.”

But the best part about zero-click content is that everyone wins. The user gets immediate value, the platform retains the user, and the brand gets recognition.

“Yes, it’s difficult to track ROI when approaching social media in this way – but zero-click content guarantees a boost in brand awareness, brand loyalty, and sets businesses apart as trusted industry thought-leaders,” adds Natalia.

And that’s not all. Research shows that these types of posts receive higher organic reach and engagement.

Hootsuite reported that link-free posts on LinkedIn generated 6x more reach on average compared to posts with links. Plus, these link-free posts received approximately 4x more reactions and 18x more comments.

“The shift towards zero-click content is forcing brands to rethink what social media success looks like. Before, it was all about generating clicks, website traffic, and conversions. Now, it’s about relying on metrics that genuinely showcase the value of social media content, such as reach, impressions, engagement, and follower growth – all of which can lead to an increase in brand awareness, leads, and sales in the long term,” Natalia adds.

How to create impactful zero-click content

• Conciseness is key. Communicate one complete, compelling idea in 200 words (ideally using bullet points)/2 minutes or less (but the shorter, the better) – basically short-form pieces/videos.
  
• Hook users by including the most notable or surprising information in the first sentence of the post.
  
• Tailor the content to the platform, using platform-specific features to optimise engagement, such as Instagram reels and LinkedIn newsletters.
  
• Use strong visuals, including infographics, to make the content more “digestible”.
  
• Avoid CTAs like “visit our website”. Instead, finish off your post with an impactful claim/suggestion or a thought-provoking question.

What do you need to understand to CAPITALISE on this change?

Brand love is great. But what businesses really care about is that bottom line. Luckily, zero-click content doesn’t have to mean zero conversions – if you use it right. Here’s what you need to know:

• Most importantly, you need to change how you view social media. It’s no longer a part of the digital consumer journey – it is the journey. Think of it as its own little world where consumers discover, explore, and ultimately, decide to buy.
  
• This means investing in “always-on” community management. Your community managers need to know your brand inside and out, from the details of your products/services to handling a crisis with empathy and transparency. Their mission? To guide customers through the consumer journey, answering questions, offering support, and adding value to every interaction.
  
• Speaking of questions, your community managers should aim to answer them all right there on the platform rather than trying to redirect people to your website. Along with giving consumers what they want (immediate answers, rather than scrolling through pages of website copy to find what they’re looking for), this zero-click approach means other potential customers can watch how you interact. Seeing you provide real-time value builds trust and credibility.
  
• Finally, it’s important to know that you don’t need to be on every single social media platform. Social media marketing is about quality, not quantity. Focus on the platforms that guarantee you’ll reach the largest portion of your target market. If you’re in South Africa, Facebook is a pretty safe bet. It has the largest and most diverse audience (with a penetration rate of 88%), plus it lets you post just about any type of content you can imagine.

Provide instant value. Hook the user with the first sentence, combined with impactful visuals. Engage in real-time. And trust that social media has the power to encompass the ENTIRE digital consumer journey.

This is the secret sauce to social media marketing success in 2024 and beyond.

It was also an evening that went down in history as the first opening ceremony held outside a stadium, and featured some of the biggest global stars, including Celine Dion and Lady Gaga.

Talk about going big to make that first impression.

But was it a “good” impression? The jury’s still out on that one.

It got me thinking about those crucial first impressions we make daily. Does going “all out” guarantee you’ll tick all the boxes in someone else’s mind? Turns out, probably not. Chances are they’ll have decided how they feel about you before you even introduce yourself. Indeed, experts have conducted countless studies to figure out how quickly a first impression is formed. And most of this research suggests that all it takes is a single glance.

So, what does this tell us? Appearances matter. People have preconceived notions about what people are like based on how they look, carry themselves, and interact with others. And, most importantly, it tells us that you simply can’t impress everyone.

The opening ceremony was an example of this. Take the segment where drag performers parodied Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”. While the intention was to promote inclusivity, the tableau sparked significant backlash instead. The Olympics organisers apologised for causing offence and tried to re-emphasise the reasons behind their creative decisions. Despite this, there are still plenty of hard feelings around the situation.

As they say, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. So, how possible is it to change someone’s mind if they’ve already counted you out? A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology showed new experiences that contradict our initial impression of someone or something are linked to the specific context in which they occur. For example, if you dislike a colleague initially but then have a positive experience with them at a party, you’ll likely only see them in a positive light in similar social settings but will continue giving them the side-eye at work.

My take-away is this: Aside from dressing professionally and putting on your friendliest smile, you have very little control over the first impressions you make – and a similar level of control when trying to change people’s perceptions of you.

But that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Authenticity always shines through. Being genuine and owning your unique quirks and strengths won’t necessarily win you any gold medals, but it will earn you people’s respect.

A legacy of being true to yourself is the most impactful impression you can leave.

It got me thinking about the significance of standing up for what we believe in, not just politically, but in all aspects of our lives. Yet, many of us hold back, afraid of offending someone, being judged, stumbling over our words, or saying the “wrong thing”. But the reality is that having an opinion shows passion, knowledge, and strength of character. And I’ve come to realise that people respect others with opinions infinitely more than those who simply always nod their head in agreement.

But the reasons why so many of us keep our opinions to ourselves? In most cases, a fear of public speaking – also known as glossophobia – and caring about how others perceive us. Glossophobia affects approximately 75% of the world’s population! That’s a lot of us feeling the jitters about voicing our thoughts in front of others.

As someone who prefers to speak to my animals rather than people, I recently did some research into how to speak my mind more confidently (your partner, relatives, colleagues – and even your dog, cat, or chicken – will certainly all perk up their ears when you put these nuggets to use!)

1. Know your stuff: Confidence comes from preparation.
2. Start small: Share your thoughts with close friends or family before taking on larger audiences. As with most things, practice makes progress (never aim for perfection – it’s unattainable and will leave you feeling like a failure every time).
3. Embrace your unique perspective: Your viewpoint is valuable because it’s uniquely yours.
4. Adjust your expectations: Shift your mindset from seeking approval to delivering a valuable message.
5. Be respectful, but firm: It’s possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Express your opinions respectfully, but don’t be afraid to stand your ground.

Every day is an opportunity for us to speak up, share our ideas, and be heard – life’s too short to stay silent. Let’s make our mark, one vote and one conversation at a time.

Fact: you can actually trick your brain into feeling less tired by playing around with how you set your goals.

Most of us love nothing more than ticking tasks off our to-do lists. But new research shows our focus shouldn’t be on completing as many tasks/goals as possible. Instead, we should be setting goals that get tougher over time.

It’s like levelling up in a game; the more challenging it gets, the more engaged you stay – and the more obstacles you overcome, the more motivated you feel!

This effective goal-setting approach was recently explored in various studies conducted by the brains of the psych departments at the universities of Texas and Oregon.

The first study involved 108 students responding to visual cues, with half of the group aiming for a specific reaction time and the other half responding at their leisure. The time-conscious bunch showed better consistency than those who weren’t worried about the clock – but they didn’t necessarily react faster or remain more focused as the task went on.

The sequel study featured 112 fresh participants and escalating goals (as opposed to static ones). The results showed significantly quicker reaction times, less mind-wandering, and steady performance throughout. No brain drain in sight!

So, how can we translate these findings into our everyday lives to make the daily grind less grinding?

1. Task breakdown: Rather than staring down a massive project, chop it up. Set specific, escalating targets for each bit. Instead of just ‘nailing that report,’ try ‘outline by 11 am,’ ‘intro done by 1 pm,’ and ‘first section wrapped up by 3 pm’.
2. Dynamic goals: If you’re smashing through tasks, try setting tighter deadlines/higher standards the next time you tackle anything similar, and see how much beating your own personal best can motivate you.
3. Upskill: Look for opportunities to learn new skills or enrich existing ones to empower you to confidently tackle your escalating goals.
4. Big-picture thinking: Goals shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. Increase motivation by connecting your smaller task goals to the bigger picture and how they contribute to overall project success and your professional development.

It certainly seems that constantly ramping up the challenge could be the secret sauce to kicking mental fatigue to the curb. Here’s to turning our to-dos into a series of ever-escalating targets and keeping our brains on their toes!

Ok, so I’m not really one for New Year’s resolutions – like Linda Piegl, I much prefer regular course correction. But December/January happens to be the one period every year that I have the necessary time to make some positive changes.

During last year’s festive season, I was forced to turn my attention to my cluttered, disorganised house after a year of neglect while juggling two young kids, many (oh, so many) pets, and a full-time job. The relief of re-organising and throwing away old, broken bits and bobs was 20 times more rejuvenating than the ‘holiday’ itself.

Suddenly, everything had its place. Tidying up after my little savages became infinitely easier and the house started looking a little less chaotic and a little more ‘Marie Kondo’.

I could finally breathe again. So, I took it a step further. The house was organised, now it was time to organise my life. I downloaded a simple ‘to-do’ list app that I could fill with those never-ending lists I was constantly creating in my head (lists that would quickly overwhelm me because I could never remember what was what or which tasks had to be done first). And bam. Everything started to run smoothly. Life was manageable – something I haven’t been able to say for a very long time.

Then I took the next plunge and joined the 5AM club, because why not? If you haven’t yet heard of this trend (which has millions of views on TikTok), it’s a simple method for self-care: get up at the crack of dawn and spend one whole hour on YOU. Your health, growth, and self-reflection. In my case, I spend the time drinking way too much tea in the garden while watching my chickens waddle around and getting a head-start on my work. But the result is the same: I always feel less stressed knowing I’ve started the day on the right foot.

Ultimately, getting rid of clutter in the house was the catalyst for eliminating the clutter from my mind and the rest of my life. And it turns out, this is a common outcome when you take that first step. According to professional organiser Raychel Klein:

“Organising our homes can extend to other areas of our lives. As we develop the habit of decluttering and maintaining order, we may find ourselves more inclined to adopt healthier lifestyle habits too.”

Hotel room left-behinds 

From glass eyes to clown costumes, people certainly forget some strange things in their hotel rooms.

It was a natural progression since starting veggie gardening a few years ago and suddenly feeling a desperate need to embrace an albeit ‘urban’ process of ‘rewilding’ (which is an emerging wellness trend making its way into the travel industry, by the way). Plus, chickens in the city – why not? (Did you know, you’re allowed up to 10 chickens in a residential area in Joburg, and in Cape Town, up to five without a permit?).

The journey from newbie chicken mama to full-blown poultry parent was unexpected. I’ve found joy in the simplest things – raising fluffy little chicks into goofy velociraptors (and nursing a sick little one along the way), watching them engage in hilarious smackdowns to steal each other’s treats, and yes, even scooping poop out of the coop every morning. It forces me into the great outdoors for a bit, and since nobody else is keen to participate in such a stinky chore, it gets me some quiet ‘me-time’, too. Ultimately, it’s safe to say my chickens have quickly become a slice of peace in my otherwise hectic world.

It’s true. Chickens are so much more than just feathered egg factories (although in the times of such serious egg shortages, every egg a backyard chicken lays may as well be golden!). Believe it or not, ‘chicken therapy’ is real. You can see it in action on the HenPower Facebook page. HenPower is essentially an organisation that brings chickens into care homes across the UK. The goal? To reduce residents’ feelings of loneliness and promote well-being. It’s an incredible initiative and so heart-warming.

Tanya Bailey, a licensed social worker, researcher, and Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota, says:

“Chickens are sentient beings with unique personalities and abilities to reason. They recognise faces, form social bonds, and are incredibly smart. I believe some chickens make choices to connect differently with people, and these connections help provide many people with learning, growth, and healing.”

Indeed, research shows chickens have personalities, emotions, and even a bit of empathy. In short, your chicken will gladly step in as a shoulder to cry on – as long as you have a couple of mealworms handy, that is.

So, here’s the thing: you don’t need a farm to welcome a (small) flock of chickens into your life. Of course, it’s important to do your research and be ready to deal with the challenges and responsibilities that come with having them in your backyard. But if you do decide to take the leap, you’ll quickly come to realise that even when juggling work, kids, and chicken chores feels like a scramble, these birds bring a sense of calm and joy into your daily routine that’s pretty cluckin’ hard to beat.

And more and more of us are turning the wondering into wandering – packing our bags and starting anew somewhere where everything just ‘works’.

Did you know that between 2015 and 2020, three times as many South Africans packed up and left compared to 2010 and 2015? And most of them were the young, skilled South Africans we desperately need to help bring about much-needed change.

I very nearly followed suit. I had it all mapped out – a grand plan for me and my fam of four to be on the right track to ‘a better life’. But when the moment came… I couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t bring myself to tear my children away from their beloved grandparents. After all, my kids would probably have more ‘opportunities’, but would they be happy? Would any of us? The saying ‘home is where the heart is’ rang very true in that moment of clarity.

Then I stumbled across a Facebook group called ‘Return to South Africa’. It was (and still is) absolutely spilling over with stories of people emigrating only to return home a few years later because the homesickness was unbearable, and suddenly, every reason they left just didn’t seem big enough to justify the sacrifice they’d made and continued to make every single day.

There were also posts from people in the midst of this unhappiness, speaking about how desperate they were to come back. And then people like me, looking for answers (or, rather, an excuse to stick around) because head and heart just weren’t seeing eye to eye.

I started to switch my thinking from what we were trying to get away from to what we’d be giving up. Family, space, year-round sunshine, Mother Nature’s finest work, smiling people everywhere you go. Oh, the people. South Africans are something else, aren’t we? Even in times of hardship, there’s always a hand reaching out to help.

Don’t get me wrong, our beloved Mzansi certainly has its challenges. There’s no denying that four hours of loadshedding, two, sometimes three times a day, is becoming unmanageable. Our crime rates are sky-high. And finding a job can be immensely challenging.

But is there anything that compares to braaiing in the sunshine, knowing you’re home and loved, surrounded by the laughter and chatter of the people you adore most (punctuated by the hum of the neighbour’s generator)? I think not.

So, here’s to our heritage and believing we can mend what’s broken. For the love of our people. For the love of our country. For the love of home.

The marketing agency at which my husband works is one of them. It’s run by two ultra-creative yet headstrong Boomers who consistently resist the idea of remote or even hybrid work for their employees.

Even my husband, an adaptable Xennial, has opinions, often stating that not everyone is ‘cut out’ for a work-from-home gig. 

He argues that what about the ‘lazy’ workers who barely tick the boxes when they’re at the office? Surely, they’ll be napping half the day away if allowed to work from home (or on an island, in the bush, or anywhere else their heart desires)?

He is completely blown away by Big Ambitions being 100% remote, with an ever-growing team and seamless operations (we love proving Elon Musk wrong!).

Everybody does what’s expected, collaboration is harmonious, and I can’t think of when anyone missed a deadline. In fact, rather than doing the bare minimum, I often see colleagues online working well outside traditional ‘working hours’.

But what makes a ‘good’ remote worker (i.e., someone who meets deadlines, demonstrates self-motivation, and communicates effectively)? And how has Big Ambitions managed to find so many of them?

Are we simply excellent at ‘reading’ people and picking out productive talent from the otherwise ‘lazy’, ‘uninspired’ masses? Are our systems and processes insanely streamlined and effective?

While I think the answer to both questions is ‘yes’, I believe the real reason why Big Ambitions and many other fully remote companies thrive is due to the nature of a work-from-home job.

Nobody is breathing down your neck all the livelong day. You’re not confined to the same four walls day in and day out. You’re free to capitalise on your most productive times. Most importantly, it’s endlessly easier to strike that ever-elusive work-life balance.

The freedom that comes with remote work is enough to motivate even the biggest so-called ‘chancers’ out there!

The research backs me up, too.

Prodoscore analysed data from 30,000 users and found a 5% increase in productivity during the COVID work-from-home period. Owl Labs discovered that remote and hybrid employees were 22% happier, more focused, and less stressed than onsite workers.

Additionally, a study by Ergotron revealed that employees experienced mental health improvements, better work-life balance, increased physical activity, and higher job satisfaction in hybrid and remote work environments.

These findings highlight the positive impact of flexible work arrangements on employee well-being and productivity. So, nope. There isn’t a mysterious personality trait that makes a ‘good’ remote worker. People are simply at their most productive when they’re comfortable and feel trusted and valued for what they do.

As the saying goes – happy employees are productive employees. But more than that. They’re innovators, collaborators, trailblazers, and changemakers.

Ultimately, remote work is here to stay. It’s time we all embrace it and adapt accordingly. After all, the benefits for employees and businesses alike are as endless as our collective (Big) ambitions!

Travelling teddy, Mini Tyson, reunited with owner

Mini Tyson, the photogenic stand-in for camera-shy adventurer Mr Tyson, has been on many hikes and holidays with his owner. Mr Tyson was heartbroken when he realised he’d left Mini behind in the Scottish Highlands. Thankfully, after reaching out on social media, the well-travelled teddy was retrieved by a hiker, and the duo are set to be reunited soon!
